Our primary organization, Genius Genius of NY, Inc. has been offering NYSED-approved teacher certification courses online since 2002. We were the first entity to offer such training online in all of New York State, and we are still the best and most trusted provider statewide. Hopefully, you have heard of us. Students from every college in New York have taken our training over the years along with people from over 170 countries around the globe.
Back in the year 2000, NY Governor Pataki passed the SAVE Act – Schools Against Violence in Education. It was a great idea, but there was a problem. Colleges statewide were not prepared to provide the training to their graduating students and applicants for certification couldn’t find the course available anywhere. Dr. McNulty was asked to create and deliver the training through CUNY Brooklyn College and the workshop was provided to thousands of individuals from all over New York State, “selling out” admissions to his two-hour class in the Education Building’s largest auditorium.
At the time (again, the year was 2001), less than half of all households had internet access, there was no such thing as a smartphone, most people used Yahoo for searches and the most popular email provider was AOL; Google had just barely entered the search engine game. There were a couple of websites that offered mandated training, but no site offered both. So, many months later, after working with developers to create a custom learning management system, Genius Genius of NY, Inc. was born and, along with some experts in the tech field, forever changed the way that teachers and other professionals in New York completed their professional training requirements by offering mandated training online.
Genius Genius now offers all New York State mandated training coursework at the website www.nysedworkshop.com (and childabuseworkshop.com). Those courses include:
Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse, Maltreatment and Neglect
Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)
Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) – under the organization name ABC BullyFree
Needs of Students with Autism (using materials from Dr. Temple Grandin, PhD with permission)
Since 2001, the NYSED has joined the digital age, as well, and now accepts applications and maintains certification/licensing files electronically.
The NYSED has now added two additional “mandated training” courses – Needs of Students with Autism (mostly for those who work in Special Education contexts or have children in their care that may be on the spectrum of Autism) and, more recently, the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) that deals with harassment, intimidation and bullying in schools.
Genius Genius offers both of the aforementioned training, with its training partner, ABC Bully Free providing the DASA workshop on their sites.
The Office of Professions and Office of Teaching Initiatives enacted multiple updates to both Chapter 56 (requiring training in Implicit Bias and Adverse Childhood Experiences/ACEs) and then Chapter 25 of Section 413 of Social Services Law since 2022.
ABC Bully Free and Genius Genius have recently consolidated multiple websites into just one. We initially operated as childabuseworkshop.com, violenceworkshop.com, autismautism.com and dasaworkshop.com, but now our main site will be NYSEDWORKSHOP.COM, with this site, childabuseworkshop.com, still being used due the changes in the Child Abuse Workshop.
